Chef Ryan Scott, former chef at Myth Cafe and Mission Beach Cafe, started his Thanksgiving Bag Lunch Giveaway in 2007 to provide 1,000 meals for various San Francisco community centers in need of meal support. In 2008 he partnered with Global Gourmet Catering and Kara’s Cupcakes to provide 1,500 bag lunches.
This year, the team will join with The Turkey Troops, a group of friends that for five years have stormed the streets of the Tenderloin on Thanksgiving Day with meals and a new pair of socks for homebound seniors, people living on the streets, and others in need. Their goal is to deliver 3,000 meals, each with a new pair of socks.
To help with this effort, The Turkey Troops need large quantities of food items, dry goods, salad containers, dried beans, sporks, small brown bags to hold the food, and socks (see below). Other needed support and their wish list is available on their Web site (www.chefryanscottandtheturkeytroops.com). Most important though, they need food and cash donations to purchase the food.
They also need volunteers to deliver the meals. Kids are needed, too, (with adult supervision) to bag the socks and apply The Turkey Troops logo sticker, as well as possibly coloring individual messages to include with the meals. The effort will be complete by noon, so volunteers can enjoy their respective traditions. For volunteering information, contact TurkeyTroops@gmail.com,
