Jane Monheit opens new season
for Bay Area Cabaret at Sir Francis Drake Hotel
By Bruce Bellingham
Jane Monheit, who has achieved real stardom in the past several years on the cabaret and jazz stages, will open the sixth season of Bay Area Cabaret with two performances at the Empire Ballroom of the Sir Francisco Drake Hotel on Sunday, Nov. 8.
She’s already recorded seven albums – she’s only 32 – and has performed with the greats, such as John Pizzarelli, Michael Feinstein and Ramsey Lewis. The sultry songstress’s latest album, The Lovers, The Dreamers and Me (also the name of her show) is a phrase from Paul Williams’s Sesame Street anthem, “Rainbow Connection.” Williams says it’s one of the best versions he’s heard. Monheit also performs songs by Paul Simon and Fiona Apple as well as standards. The ballads serve her well. For the first time in San Francisco, she performs a duo act, that is, accompanied by a pianist.
Jane Monheit in The Lovers, the Dreamers and Me: Empire Ballroom, Sir Francisco Drake Hotel, 450 Powell Street (at Sutter); Nov. 8, 4 p.m. & 7 p.m.; tickets $40–$50 at City Box Office, 415-392-4400, www.cityboxoffice.com.
