Milton & Peggy Salkind 2nd International Piano Duo Festival
By Bruce Bellingham

Last year’s unusual foray into the world of piano duo concerts – a three-day event that drew world-class players from such far-flung places as Bulgaria, Italy, Latvia, Australia, New York, and Berkeley – was such a success that it will be repeated this year, again at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music on Oak Street, off Van Ness Avenue.

Cathy and Tony Angelo, Marin-based pianists, who have toured the world for more than 30 years, are organizing the festival. They’ve made lots of friends around the globe, and some of them will perform at the festival on July 5-7.

The festival honors the piano duo Milton and Peggy Salkind, and is sponsored by the San Francisco International Music Festival organization. Cathy says the performances provide “an intriguing mix of traditional and innovative, seldom-heard compositions for piano duo with other instruments and voices.” Presented in the beautiful new concert hall at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, the Salkind International Piano Duo Festival will also feature the Grotrian Duo Grand piano, a one-of-a-kind instrument designed for the piano duo genre by the Grotrian Piano Company.

Don’t miss it,” Cathy urges. “It’s a rare opportunity to experience the rich sonorities and rewarding repertoire of the piano duo genre.” Indeed, the performances are remarkable, and one is struck how each artist, combined with the artistry of his or her partner, evokes so many distinct sounds.

Cathy and Tony are a story unto themselves. They met at the now-vanished Music & Arts Institute in Pacific Heights over 30 years ago, fell in love and were married. They’ve recorded two CDs, Brahms by the Bridge and En Blanc et Noir, and have been guests on Sedge Thomson’s syndicated radio show, West Coast Live, and on Alan Farley’s classical music program on KALW-FM (91.7).

Milton & Peggy Salkind Second International Piano Duo Festival: Concert Hall, San Francisco Conservatory of Music, 50 Oak St.; July 5, 4 p.m. & 8 p.m.; July 6, 4 p.m. & 7:30 p.m.; admission $15-$35; July 7, 1 p.m. free children’s concert; tickets and information at www.sfmf.org or 415-705 0846.
