IDOLS INVADE THE RRAZZ ROOM
By Bruce Bellingham

Artists from the first six seasons of the unavoidable American Idol phenomenon will be appearing at the Rrazz Room in the Hotel Nikko all through July and August. In addition, summer at the Rrazz features guitar legends Ottmar Liebert, July 6-7, and Larry Carlton, Aug. 10-11.

The nine weeks of 17 artists from Idol will be under the direction of Michael Orland, pianist, arranger and associate music director for American Idol.

These handpicked finalists will perform a combination of popular and original songs with live musical accompaniment. San Francisco is the first city on a projected nationwide Idols in Concert tour. The performers of Idols in Concert may change. Such are the vagaries of show business.

Here is the schedule at press time:

July 1-6: the summer tour will launch with three finalists: LaKisha Jones, who placed fourth in season six; Jon Peter Lewis, who placed eighth in season three; and Anwar Robinson, who placed seventh in season four.

July 8-12: this week’s crop of budding talent will include Gina Glocksen, who placed ninth in season six; and a reprise of Jon Peter Lewis and Anwar Robinson.

July 14-19: joining Gina Glocksen in week three will be Rickey Smith, who finished eighth in season two; and Lisa Tucker, who placed fifth in season five.

July 21-26: Rickey Smith returns for another week and will be joined by Julia DeMato, who placed tenth in season two; and Trenyce, who finished fifth in season two.

July 28-Aug. 2: Julia DeMato and Trenyce return for an encore week, and will be joined by RJ Helton, who finished in fifth place in season one.

Aug. 4-9: Week six of the tour welcomes Constantine Maroulis, who finished sixth in season four; Vonzell Solomon, who placed third in season four; and Jasmine Trias, who placed third in season three.

Aug. 11-16: Week seven will be a reprise of week six featuring Constantine Maroulis, Vonzell Solomon, and Jasmine Trias.

Aug. 18-23: In week eight, the Idols Tour welcomes Christina Christian, who placed sixth during season one; Leah LaBelle, who placed twelfth in season three; and Brandon Rogers, who placed twelfth in season six.

Aug. 25-30:  The final week of the tour will feature an encore performance by Christina Christian; the debut of Camile Velascco, who placed ninth in season three; and Paris Bennett, who finished fifth in season five.

Over the years, Ottmar Liebert has released no fewer than 22 recordings including live releases, Christmas CDs, original music and more. His debut album in 1990, Nouveau Flamenco, became the biggest-selling guitar CD of all time. Billboard magazine honored him twice as New Age Artist of the Year.

Guitarist and composer Larry Carlton has excelled as a solo performer, band member and as a session musician. He has composed music for film and television soundtracks as well as his own recordings. During the ’70s and early ’80s, Carlton appeared as a session musician on up to 500 recordings a year, including albums by Steely Dan, Joni Mitchell, Billy Joel and Quincy Jones.
