Not To Miss Dish
Cheung Hing's Roast Duck
By Bill Knutson

DuckHaving been born and raised in the Sunset District, I have few reasons to brave the fog besides visiting my family. And the Sunset is not readily known as Mecca for fine foods. But every once in a while I put on my layers, and wait in line at Cheung Hing on Noriega Street for the finger-licking goodness that is known as roast duck. I know I can find roast duck in just about every neighborhood in San Francisco. And I have had some mighty fine seared duck breasts or duck confit at many of the best restaurants in the City. But nothing comes close to Cheung Hing. The ducks are seasoned very nicely, and are always fresh and hot. The restaurant roasts nearly 200 every day. If you are ordering for yourself, the duck over rice (for less than $5) is a great meal. If you are bringing home for others, you can buy a half or whole duck to go. I usually pick up a duck, some roast or BBQ pork, chicken, a vegetable dish, and a rice or noodle dish for a quick and easy Chinese buffet for dinner. I recommend take out unless you like eating in close quarters.
