Connie Champagne takes a turn at the songs of Dusty Springfield
By Bruce Bellingham
For years, the extraordinarily dynamic, energized Connie Champagne has been doing her Judy Garland act – arguably performing Judy Garland better than Judy Garland. Now, Connie takes on another legend – the inimitable Dusty Springfield, who has retained an almost saint-like status over the decades in the United Kingdom.
Like one to Judy Garland, a tribute to Dusty is not for amateurs. Both singers are practically impossible to imitate successfully without tumbling into a mawkish sort of kitsch, mostly because they were so good. In Dusty’s case, few singers got to work with the notoriously tough taskmaster, Burt Bacharach.
If anyone is up to the challenge, it’s Connie Champagne, who is a real pro herself. Her show opened at The New Conservatory Theatre Center on July 26 and it runs through August 10. It’s also a treat to hear those great tunes, such as, “Wishin’ and Hopin’” … “I Only Want To Be with You” … “You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me” … “The Look of Love” … and “Son of a Preacher Man”.
A Brand New Me: Connie Champagne Sings the Dusty Springfield Songbook: The New Conservatory Theatre Center, Theatre III, 25 Van Ness Ave. (at Market); Friday-Saturday, 8 p.m. & Sunday, 2 p.m. through August 10; tickets $18-$28 at 415-861-8972 or nctcsf.org
