The Penny Pincher:
Villa Romana Ristorante Italiano
By R. Gordon

731 Irving Street (near Ninth), 415-731-2280, www.villaromanasf.com.

VillaThis month’s Penny Pincher takes us across town for a very special occasion. In a city where more than 50 percent of restaurants close in the first year, April 20 marks the 55th anniversary of the first Italian restaurant in the Sunset district: Villa Romana.

Chef-owner Antonio Accardo and his wife, Giulia, were way ahead of today’s trends, swearing by fresh, locally produced ingredients from the very beginning. The prices at Villa Romana have always been reasonable, but to celebrate their 55th anniversary, on April 20 from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m., the Accardo family is rolling back the prices to 1955. You read that right – you can try house favorites like crab cioppino and hand-tossed pizza for the same price you would have paid 55 years ago. Now that’s a deal even for the Penny Pincher!
